Zero Waste

What comes to mind when you think of the word "waste?" Do you think of industrial waste from a factory or maybe simply taking out the trash? How about the human-made waste we see in the natural environment like beaches, oceans, rivers or forests?

Now, what comes to mind when you think of the term "zero waste?" Maybe that’s something for businesses to figure out. Or maybe it's on us as individuals, too. Does going zero waste mean we have to give up our identities? Or is it something we all could integrate into our daily lives?

From an individual perspective, reducing waste can be applied to almost everything we do. Because of this, zero waste can look like anything from reducing emissions caused by driving or even the impact of our diets and, of course, so much more.

The beauty of zero waste is that it doesn’t have to only apply to our physical trash, but it can also apply to anything, even the businesses we run or the places we work.

Reducing a company’s waste can look a lot like simplifying and minimizing, whether with time, money, energy or other resources. Often things that save resources and reduce waste also save money, which is a win-win. Many changes that businesses can make may seem like too much money or time to implement, but they can pay off in the end if those changes are right for your business.

All the world’s problems won’t miraculously be solved when we suddenly stop using plastic or single-use products. But it is without a doubt that ending the copious amounts of trash we generate is essential to view other aspects of our lives differently and make changes in other areas.

Zero waste is an essential building block to living a more sustainable life, creating a more sustainable business and a more considerate community. It will look different for all us, but that is the beauty of it, isn’t it? Make it your own, and feel good about all the positivity that comes with these changes.

Erda advocates a' Zero Waste' goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use. We endeavor to work with communities, groups, whanau and agencies that strive to work towards a common goal for sustainable living and zero waste.
